Why is Sophomore Year in High School Important TKG

Why is Sophomore Year in High School Important When it comes to college prep, all of the conversations often seem to revolve around junior year. It’s the year when students start visiting colleges, taking their standardized tests, and seeing their friends who are seniors get stressed out every fall and then experience the thrill of getting into their schools of choice throughout the year. What we want to emphasize here, though, is the importance of sophomore year. Yes, the year after freshman year and before the Big. Daunting. Junior. Year. Begins. While every year is important, sophomore year often gets lost in the mix. Every year is important in high school. Each year is a part of the foundation of the college application pyramid because colleges will see every single class is on your transcript. So don’t fall into the trap of, “I can skate by and then start to care junior year.” If you do that, it’ll be too late. So, why is sophomore year specifically important? Think of sophomore year as a gift: you adjusted to hig h school during freshman year, you explored some interests, joined some clubs, but you don’t have the burden of testing and college tours quite yet. As a result, it’s the year that most of our clients tend to spend defining and refining their interests through compelling projects, intensive research, reading, and online courses. Then by junior year, they’re ready to take on leadership positions in their extracurricular activities and are set up for success to take over the world. Or at least their high school newspaper or debate team.CASE STUDY: Take Scott. He was our student a couple of years ago. He left middle school unsure of his path but knew that he was seriously interested in the humanities. Specifically, creative writing, art, and journalism. He joined the following clubs during his freshman year: Creative Writing Club, Poetry Club, the soccer team, the school newspaper as an assistant reporter, the literary journal, and he read four books (not assigned by school) thr oughout the year. He liked them all but was really able to sink his teeth into the interviews that he had begun to do for the school newspaper. He was gaining traction interviewing various librarians in the region in an effort to promote local literacy programs. Before and throughout sophomore year, we helped him trim the fat. He dropped Creative Writing and Poetry clubs to focus his energy on the newspaper and literary magazines. He was promoted to reporter and opinion section editor (no longer assistant) and spent his free time bolstering an independent project that he had begun doodling over the summer: a Maus-esque cartoon series chronicling the great migration (one of his four books freshman year was The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson, which struck a chord). Throughout sophomore, junior year, and into senior year, he delved deeper into this cartoon series, publishing occasional excerpts in the Arts section of the newspaper and literary magazine while compiling a full novel-length series of illustrations and stories. He continued reading books specifically exploring the use of redlining and gerrymandering to oppress non-white people financially and politically. He rose to become Editor-in-Chief of his school newspaper, and remained editor of the literary magazine throughout the rest of his time in high school, helping to change the name and the purpose to be distinctly social justice-oriented (proceeds of the magazine were donated to local literacy programs) He got into his first choice, Wash U. St. Louis. When you look at Scott’s experience, it’s tempting to focus on the outcome and the list of “stuff.” But what we are interested in is the inflection point that was sophomore year. He spent his time freshman year exploring and casting a wide net. He then used sophomore year to drill down his extracurricular schedule to the essentials directly related to his area of interest: creative expressions that promoted access to literacy, politics, and journalism. If the activity did not fit into this theme, it was cut. And he paid attention to and nurtured a long-term independent project that tied all of these passions and interests together.   Let us know if you need some guidance sorting your interests out-- we know it can be overwhelming, but we’re here to help.

Make a Memory Book With Questions to Ask Your Relatives

Important pieces of a familys history are found only in the memories of the living relatives. But many times those personal stories are never written down or shared before it is too late. The thought-provoking questions in a memory book can make it easier for a grandparent or other relation to recall people, places and times that they thought they had forgotten. Help them tell their story and record their precious memories for posterity by creating a personalized memory book or journal for them to complete. Make a Memory Book Begin by purchasing an empty three ring binder or a blank writing journal. Look for something that either has removable pages or lies flat when open to make writing easier. I prefer the binder because it lets you print and use your own pages. Even better, it also allows your relative to make mistakes and start over with a fresh page, which can help lessen the intimidation factor. Create a List of Questions Be sure to include questions which cover each phase of the individuals life: childhood, school, college, job, marriage, raising children, etc. Get your family into the act and have your other relations and children suggest questions that interest them. These history interview questions can help you get started, but dont be afraid to come up with additional questions of your own. Gather Together Family Photos Select images that include your relative and their family. Have them professionally scanned into digital format or do it yourself. You can also photocopy the photos, but this generally doesnt yield as nice a result. A memory book offers an excellent opportunity to have kin identify individuals and recall stories in unidentified photos. Include one or two unidentified photos per page, with sections for your relative to identify the people and place, plus any stories or memories which the photo may prompt them to recall. Create Your Pages If youre using a hard-backed journal you can print and paste in your questions or, if you have nice handwriting, pen them in by hand. If youre using a 3-ring binder, use a software program such to create and arrange your pages before printing them out. Include only one or two questions per page, leaving plenty of room for writing. Add photos, quotes or other little memory triggers to accent the pages and provide further inspiration. Assemble Your Book Decorate the cover with personalized sayings, photos or other family memories. If you want to get really creative, scrapbooking supplies such as archival-safe stickers, die cuts, trim, and other decorations can help you add a customized, personal touch to the publishing process. Once your memory book is complete, send it off to your relative with a pack of good writing pens and a personal letter. Once they have completed their memory book, you may want to send new pages with questions to add to the book. Once they return the completed memory book to you, be sure to have photocopies made to share with family members and protect against possible loss.

Saying Goodbye!! free essay sample

Ive learned that goodbyes will always hurt, pictures never replace having been there, memories, good or bad, will bring tears and words can never replace feelings. There were many things I wanted to write before writing on the word goodbye, but life takes a man to where fate has decided and It never goes In the neat little order we desire. I never thought that saying goodbye would be so hard. I am 14 but life has taught me one thing that u might forget the place where you were born but u wont forget the place or people who made you feel so special. I have to accept that for every hello oh say, theres a sad goodbye.I remember it was jejune 2008 1 was Jolted into real life. Sometimes being strong means being able to let go, but I wasnt strong to concede that the time is up and finally I have to say goodbye to the one who made me laugh, who made me realize that I was better than anyone, who made me feel like a princess, who let me sleep in her arms when I was all alone and who spent her nights to tell me stories about prophets. We will write a custom essay sample on Saying Goodbye!! or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It was 18 June 2008, it seemed to me that everything around me had stood idle, there was silence because my ears were not dead to accept what they just heard, and my mind repeated the words- grandmother has passed away.I went to my home town for her funeral, she was cold because she was dead, I couldnt believe that she was the same lady I met a month ago. Her lips were silent with no smile, her eyes were closed with no spark, and her heart was in her chest with no beat of life and a body with no soul. I finally had to say goodbye forever because according to the law of nature there is no hope of meeting her again in this world and Ill never get a chance to tell her how much I loved her. I might meet her in the next world, in the life after death but not until my heart is beating and my soul is within me.I wish that GOD give human one last chance to meet with the one they love and if that was possible I would only say her that Ill miss you forever, Ill miss you always, Goodbye is so hard, but Ill say It anyways. For the first time In my life I felt real pain, real heartache. It was 5:30, I was hit with the truth, It was Wednesday, my grandmother died, It was 6th month of 2008, a part of me died. I knew that this moment would come In time. That I have to let her go and watch her soul fly. I knew she wont come back but even after 12 months I was dying inside. Even today when I am writing this I am searching for words to define my feelings. I always try hiding my emotions but eyes dont lie. I guess theres no easy way to say goodbye. Its weird, you know the end of something great is coming, but you want to just hold on, Just for one more second Just so it can hurt a little more. Oftentimes we say goodbye to the person we love without wanting to. Though that doesnt mean that weve stopped loving them or weve stopped to care. Sometimes goodbye is a painful way to say I love you. Once I said goodbye with no hope of meeting again, and life taught me how hard It Is but to say goodbye with a little tad of hope Is even more painful because you never know that the candle of your hope will keep burning or fade In the world of darkness and despair. There is nothing in the world that compares to saying goodbye. The the hope that this is not the last goodbye. The hope that keeps us going, keeps our heads high as we wait for the next time; if that next time comes. Some people dont hind that saying goodbye is such a big deal, probably because they have never had to do so.We laughed until we had to cry, we loved right down to our last goodbye, but over the years well smile and recall, for Just one moment- we had it all. I remember it was 3rd April 2010, I walked last time through the gates of the place I spent seven most tremendous years of my life. My school although it has four walls but has future of thousands of minds. My school- CONVENT, where I met with the people who belonged to the same world like me but think in their own way and live in world full of love and care, moreover in search of peace.I remember my first nun, sister Magdalene who taught me how to forgive, how to care and most importantly how to say goodbye not only to humans but to regret, despair and loneliness. It was a pleasant morning but however I was surrounded by fear of losing some special friends who held their hands when I needed them the most. I said goodbye to them in an unbelievable way, I was not quite sure about what I was saying but I knew it was the time to finally say goodbye to them and move on with a new life. The loss of friend is like that of a limb.Time may heal the anguish of the wound, but the loss cannot be repaired. If saying goodbye hurts so much, why do we say goodbye? Because it hurts so much more to keep holding on to something that isnt there.. However, if you look at saying goodbye as a new hope, things begin to brighten up. You have a hope that you will someday be able to see them again. Saying goodbye may bring a great deal of sadness, but the amount of sadness depends on your hope in seeing them again. It is the end of something simple and the beginning of everything else.
